The controversial story of Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha is one of Bollywood’s most intriguing untold tales. Even today, Rekha’s deep affection for Amitabh Bachchan is evident in her every action. While everyone is aware of their love story, the two have never publicly acknowledged their relationship or spoken about it.
Beginning of Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha’s Love Story
When Amitabh Bachchan first met Rekha, he was already married to Jaya Bachchan and had two children with her—Shweta Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. He had married Jaya Bachchan on June 3, 1973, after the success of Zanjeer. However, within a few years of their marriage, rumors began to circulate about Amitabh’s growing closeness to Rekha. The two first met on the sets of Do Anjaane in 1976, and they quickly fell in love.
Amitabh and Rekha tried to keep their relationship a secret, often meeting at a bungalow owned by one of Rekha’s friends. Despite their best efforts, their affair became public when Amitabh lost his temper on the set of Ganga Ki Saugandh (1978) after a co-actor misbehaved with Rekha. This incident caught the public’s attention, and people began to speculate about their relationship. Although both Amitabh and Rekha consistently denied the affair, it became more evident over time, especially after Silsila director Yash Chopra confirmed their relationship in an interview. He revealed that in the film he could see their real-life coming to reel life.
Rumors of a Secret Marriage
There were also rumors that Amitabh and Rekha had secretly married. These rumors intensified when Rekha attended Neetu Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor’s wedding, wearing a mangalsutra and sindoor.
End of Amitabh and Rekha’s Relationship
After the filming of Silsila ended, Amitabh began distancing himself from Rekha, possibly due to his commitment to Jaya Bachchan. Rekha reportedly tried to convince him to marry her, but Amitabh loved Jaya more than Rekha and ultimately chose to end his relationship with Rekha. In an interview, Rekha shared that after the trial show of Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Amitabh refused to work with her again. She also recalled an incident where Jaya Bachchan invited her to dinner and made it clear that no matter what happened, she would never leave Amitabh—an indirect but firm warning to Rekha.
Rekha later married Mukesh Aggarwal, but their marriage was short-lived. Rekha discovered that Mukesh suffered from mental illness, and he tragically took his own life by hanging himself with Rekha’s dupatta. After his death, Rekha was unfairly labeled a “vamp” by his family.
And Rekha’s love for Amitabh Bachchan never faded; it continued on………
Even today, Rekha’s love for Amitabh Bachchan is apparent, and many fans wish that Amitabh had married Rekha, especially seeing Jaya Bachchan’s arrogant behavior.
